Beyond the image: photography as object, document and artifact
Some photographs are significant not only for the image they contain, but for the object itself. Contact sheets, Polaroids, original Cibachrome prints and other archival materials preserve traces of the photographic process — how an image was made, selected, printed, circulated and ultimately preserved.
Within the history of punk, these objects can offer a particularly direct connection to the moment. They belong to the working archives of photographers and to the material culture through which the movement was documented and understood.
TMPG places particular emphasis on these exceptional objects: works whose rarity, provenance, physical characteristics or relationship to the photographer’s archive give them a significance beyond the image alone.
