CBGB

CBGB was more than a music venue. It was the birthplace of American punk and one of the most influential clubs in the history of popular music. From the mid-1970s onward, the Ramones, Patti Smith, Television, Blondie, Talking Heads, Richard Hell, the Dead Boys and many others turned a small Bowery bar into the centre of a cultural shift.

This collection brings together museum-quality photographs of the artists, the performances and the room itself. The work was made by photographers who were regulars rather than visitors: Godlis, who photographed the Bowery at night through the late 1970s; Roberta Bayley, who worked the door and shot for Punk magazine; Ebet Roberts, Bob Gruen, Allan Tannenbaum and Bobby Grossman, each of whom documented the club across its defining years.

Together the photographs preserve the visual history of a venue whose influence far outlasted the building. Each work is produced from the original negative or colour transparency, hand-signed by the photographer or the estate, and accompanied by a certificate of authenticity.
