About this work

In early 1977 the NME sent Chalkie Davies and writer Mick Farren to New York to cover the punk scene. "The main reason we were there was to do a cover story on the Ramones."

After meeting at Joey Ramone's apartment on a Sunday afternoon, they walked to an alley off the Bowery, full of garbage and abandoned furniture. "The city had just declared itself bankrupt and was very different from the way it is today." The band's art director, Arturo Vega, helped with the poses: "I told them where to stand, and he told them how to stand."

From the session that produced the Ramones' NME cover.
