About this work

Elvis Costello, who produced The Specials' first album, suggested Chalkie Davies to Jerry Dammers for the sleeve. Dammers had the location ready, the Canal Basin in Coventry, and cited The Who's My Generation as a reference.

The band was photographed from above. Only ten frames were made of this pose. For the sleeve the members were cut out with scissors and placed on white. This is the original, uncut photograph. "Seven very individual people, and one of the best bands I ever worked with."

Photograph by Chalkie Davies. Available as a print signed by the artist. Sizes, edition details and price on request.
