About this work

During the shoot for The Specials' first album in Coventry, Carol Starr made an SX-70 Polaroid of the band from ground level. Seeing it, Chalkie Davies told the seven musicians to hold their positions, framed the scene in his Hasselblad and made a single frame, "probably the best group shot I ever did."

It became the back cover of the album and its poster, and in the United States, against the band's wishes, the front cover.
