About this work

To mark the release of The Clash's first album in April 1977, the NME put the band on its cover. Their manager Bernie Rhodes decided that "the photos and the interview should be done on the Circle Line." Chalkie Davies and writer Tony Parsons met the band at midday on the Baker Street platform.

A tight head shot from the ride became the cover. This frame was never published at the time and remained unseen for more than 35 years. "What comes across to me is just how young we all were back then, in 1977."
