About this work

On The Who's 25th anniversary tour of America in 1989, Chalkie Davies wanted "something better than the obligatory live photo." He had heard that Pete Townshend had smashed a Rickenbacker in private because "the damned thing would not stay in tune."

In a small studio set up in the Houston dressing room, the broken guitar was arranged with John Entwistle's spider necklace and one of Roger Daltrey's battered microphones: a portrait of The Who without the band.
