About this work

Photographed for a cover story in The Face in 1981. Paul Weller held a fixed, questioning stare and would not change his expression, and Chalkie Davies felt "the photo needed something and I told him so."

Weller took a match from a box and put it in his mouth, and the picture came alive. He moved it between frames, so "the position of the match governs the choice."
