About this work

Nina Simone photographed by Barrie Wentzell in 1969.

Simone was then at the height of her powers and of her political engagement, performing material that moved between classical technique, jazz phrasing and the civil rights movement without acknowledging any boundary between them. She toured Europe frequently in these years, and increasingly preferred it to the United States.
