Davis was then leading the group with Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter and Tony Williams that is remembered as his second great quintet, in the last years before he turned towards electric instruments. Melody Maker covered jazz as closely as rock throughout the period, which brought Wentzell to musicians of Davis's standing as a matter of routine.
