About this work

"Whilst others had problems with him, I always found Ian Dury to be fun to photograph." Before his first American tour in 1978, Ian Dury spent royalties from "Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick" on dental work, and had the idea of painting a Union Jack on his temporary bridge so that American audiences would see the British flag every time he grinned.

Chalkie Davies took his lights to the dentist's surgery on Harley Street and photographed Dury in the chair. The NME used the session as a cover. It remains one of Davies's favourite photographs of Dury.
