About this work

Elvis Costello's early song "Hoover Factory" was about the Art Deco building he passed every day on his way to work as a computer operator. When the Sunday Times commissioned Chalkie Davies to photograph Costello in early 1978, he chose the factory gates on Western Avenue as the location, a private joke since almost no one knew the song yet.

Made with a wide-angle lens about fifteen inches from Costello's face, the picture catches the impish look in his eyes. Davies calls him "the best new British singer/songwriter to have come along in decades."
