About this work

When the NME chose Debbie Harry for its cover in 1977, Chalkie Davies proposed a studio session instead of the paper's usual reportage. Having shot The Clash on white earlier that year, he photographed her against black.

The session was booked for ten in the morning after a late night. Harry arrived exhausted, so Davies handed her a pair of Ray-Ban sunglasses. Wearing a Rudolph Valentino T-shirt and seated on a stool, she worked through a session of about fifteen minutes. In his words, she "virtually defines the word photogenic." The photograph ran on the NME cover the following week.
