About this work

In 1983 Chalkie Davies photographed David Gilmour in London for an album sleeve designed with Storm Thorgerson of Hipgnosis, whose Atom Heart Mother cover had made Davies want to become a photographer at fifteen.

A first session in a white-background studio was cancelled after a single SX70 Polaroid. The reshoot took place in a small portrait studio in the garage of a mews house, with a minimal crew. Davies lit the face from below, "to cast a slight shadow up onto his cheek and to generally add a bit of drama," and gave Gilmour his own battered leather jacket to make him look a little tougher.
