About this work

Three photographs made on the last night of the Ziggy Stardust tour at the Hammersmith Odeon in July 1973, the concert at which David Bowie retired the Spiders from Mars.

Bowie appears in the short kimono he opened the show in, alongside Mick Ronson, of whom Chalkie Davies writes that "nobody ever played the part of the guitar hero better." The centre frame shows the most talked-about moment of the tour: Bowie kneeling in front of Ronson during "The Jean Genie", playing a harmonica solo.

These photographs mark the beginning of Chalkie Davies's career in music photography.
