About this work

November 1975: Bruce Springsteen's first London concert, preceded by an aggressive record company campaign. After the show, Chalkie Davies saw him walk alone towards the party in the Balcony Bar, still wearing the woolly hat he had performed in.

Springsteen stopped beneath a sign reading "Finally London is Ready for Bruce Springsteen" and looked up at it. That is the moment in this photograph. His mood changed visibly, and he was later reported to have asked his management to stop the hype and let the music speak for itself.

An intimate, unguarded moment in rock history.
