Biography

Mark Weiss (New Jersey, b. 1960) is an American photographer whose work provides an intimate visual record of the rise of rock and heavy metal during the 1980s. Beginning his career as a teenager photographing concerts in the New York area, he quickly established himself as one of the most trusted photographers within the music industry.

As a staff photographer for Circus Magazine, Weiss gained unprecedented access to the artists, tours, and backstage environments that defined a generation. His photographs document musicians not only on stage, but also in the private moments that shaped the mythology of rock culture, offering a rare insider's perspective on one of the most influential periods in popular music history.

Over the course of his career, Weiss photographed artists including Van Halen, Mötley Crüe, Metallica, Guns N' Roses, Bon Jovi, Ozzy Osbourne, Aerosmith, Twisted Sister, and many others. His images have appeared in magazines, books, album packaging, and international exhibitions, becoming part of the visual identity of the era itself.

Among his most recognized works are photographs associated with landmark albums such as Bon Jovi's Slippery When Wet and Twisted Sister's Stay Hungry, images that helped define the visual language of 1980s rock music and continue to resonate with audiences today.

The selection presented by The Music Photo Gallery highlights this pivotal moment in American popular culture, when photography became inseparable from the image, energy, and mythology of rock and roll. Through Weiss's lens, viewers are invited to experience a world that existed both on stage and behind the scenes, preserved by one of the era's most important photographic witnesses.

Hair metal, heavy metal. Mark Weiss shot it all.

He was just 18 in the late 1970s when the now-defunct glossy began paying him to shoot rock shows. By the mid-’80s, Weiss was the undisputed Richard Avedon of the spandex-and-teased-hair set. He bopped from photo pits to backstage, capturing everyone from Ozzy Osbourne to Aerosmith and Twisted Sister.
