Biography
Barry Schultz’s photographs form a vivid transatlantic record of 1970s rock, preserving the artists, performances, and backstage moments that shaped a generation.

Barry Schultz is a Los Angeles–born rock photographer whose archive documents the energy, access, and spontaneity of the 1970s music scene. Working between Los Angeles and Amsterdam, he photographed a generation of artists at the moment rock culture was becoming a global phenomenon.

Schultz developed his passion for music photography while working at a camera store in Los Angeles, using lunch breaks, evenings, and weekends to photograph musicians. After relocating to Amsterdam, he became an official Dutch pop photographer and worked across interviews, sound checks, concerts, parties, backstage encounters, and posed sessions.

His subjects include The Rolling Stones, David Bowie, Bob Marley, Blondie, Fleetwood Mac, The Police, Tom Waits, the Eagles, Iggy Pop, Ringo Starr, George Harrison, Alice Cooper, ABBA, Queen, Elton John, Bruce Springsteen, Michael Jackson, and many others. Some sessions lasted only a minute; others gave him the time to create intimate portraits beyond the stage.

Looking back, Schultz has described the period as wonderful and crazy—a time when neither the photographers nor their subjects fully realized they were recording rock history. His photographs now offer an extraordinary transatlantic record of popular music during one of its most transformative decades.

The Music Photo Gallery presents a curated selection from Barry Schultz’s archive, bringing collectors closer to the musicians, venues, and backstage moments that defined the era.
