Bob Gruen has photographed rock and roll for more than fifty years, and for much of that time he was not documenting the scene from outside it but living in it.

He photographed John Lennon and Yoko Ono through their New York years and made the NYC T-shirt portrait in 1974. He photographed the New York Dolls before they had a record, the Ramones in Forest Hills and in the subway in 1975, Led Zeppelin in front of the Starship, the Sex Pistols on their American tour in 1978, the Clash through their rise, and Debbie Harry, Tina Turner, Iggy Pop, Patti Smith, David Bowie and Elton John across the same decades.

What holds the work together is access earned rather than arranged. Gruen was trusted by the musicians he photographed, and the pictures carry the ease of someone who was simply there.

This collection includes vintage photographs, signed limited editions and rare works from the archive. Each work is produced from the original negative or colour transparency, hand-signed by the photographer, and accompanied by a certificate of authenticity and a secure digital provenance record.
