The Screamers, Los Angeles's most confrontational early punk band, photographed by Chris Stein during a West Coast passage. Fronted by Tomata du Plenty and built on synthesizers rather than guitars, the group became one of the scene's great might-have-beens, remembered largely through images like this.

Stein's lens followed the wider punk network beyond New York. His photographs from the road document a movement forming simultaneously in cities across the country.
