Photographed in New York City in 1976, this portrait became the cover of the Ramones’ debut album—and one of the most recognizable images in rock history.

Roberta Bayley photographed the band with the directness of someone already inside the downtown scene. The brick wall, leather jackets and unguarded posture gave the Ramones a visual identity as immediate as their music.

The photograph remains closely tied to the culture that formed around CBGB and the Bowery: informal, confrontational and entirely new.
