Smith’s face occupies nearly the full vertical frame as she looks directly into the lens. The close crop removes almost all environmental detail, leaving the dark sweep of hair, pale skin, and open collar to structure the image. Hanekroot’s uncompromising proximity gives the portrait a plainspoken intensity, clearly separating it from the fuller-body photographs made in the same year.
