George Michael, 1987

George Michael photographed by Martyn Goddard in 1987, around the video shoot for his solo single "I Want Your Sex", a stark black-and-white studio frame, all cheekbones and confidence, catching the singer at the exact moment he stepped out of Wham! and into one of the biggest solo careers in pop.

Goddard worked with Michael through the 1980s, and this portrait belongs to the pivotal year of Faith, when he remade himself as a serious, self-directed artist.
