About this work

This portrait of Debbie Harry in a pink sweater presents a quieter register within Chris Stein’s archive of Blondie. Color, clothing, and expression give the image a measured intimacy, apart from the more public grammar of stage and street.

Stein’s long collaboration with Harry allowed him to photograph across a wide emotional range. His portraits reveal the construction of image while preserving the ease of personal proximity.
