Series Stamped by the Artist’s Estate
In this intimate series of extreme facial close-ups, Mick Rock brings the viewer within inches of David Bowie. Photographed at Haddon Hall, Bowie’s home in Beckenham, in the spring of 1972, the images were made as the visual identity of Ziggy Stardust was taking shape.
Rather than a conventional portrait, Rock isolates Bowie’s eyelash, gaze, makeup, skin and flashes of red hair. The tight crop turns subtle shifts of expression into vivid studies of beauty, vulnerability and self-invention—qualities at the heart of Bowie’s transformation during this pivotal year.
The session belongs to the defining early collaboration between Bowie and Rock. One of these close-up portraits was selected for the front cover of RCA’s 1972 worldwide reissue of Space Oddity, linking the album that first introduced Major Tom with the breakthrough era that made Bowie an international icon.
Each limited-edition archival pigment print is offered unframed and stamped by the artist’s estate.
