Bob Dylan’s first appearance at the Newport Folk Festival in 1963 became a defining moment in his rise from emerging songwriter to the commanding new voice of American folk music.

Following the excitement generated by the Friday Songwriters’ Workshop, Dylan took the main stage before an audience of thousands. His set moved between stark protest songs and sharply observed, darkly humorous material, culminating in a standing ovation.

Rowland Scherman’s dramatic black-and-white photograph isolates Dylan beneath the stage lights with his acoustic guitar and harmonica. The spare composition captures the confidence and intensity of a performer fully in command of the moment.
