At the 1963 Newport Folk Festival, Rowland Scherman encountered a young Bob Dylan during the Friday Songwriters’ Workshop. Dylan wore a weathered shirt with a bullwhip coiled over his shoulder—an enigmatic detail that immediately caught the photographer’s attention.

Scherman approached Dylan and asked if he could make a story about him. Dylan agreed, and Scherman made a single frame: the first photograph he ever took of Dylan. That weekend would mark Dylan’s first appearance at Newport and a decisive moment in his emergence as a defining voice of the American folk movement.

This intimate black-and-white portrait captures Dylan before the mythology had fully formed: alert, unconventional and already unmistakably himself.

This work is produced from Rowland Scherman’s original negative and offered as a limited-edition archival pigment print in three sizes:
