About this work

Made in New York City in 1978, this second rooftop image of Andy Warhol with Debbie Harry extends Chris Stein’s record of an extraordinary downtown exchange. The work joins art, music, portraiture, and social proximity within a single urban setting.

Stein’s access to Harry and to the wider downtown scene allowed him to photograph moments where cultural histories crossed without ceremony. The image is both portrait and document of a shared creative world.
