About this work

One Sunday afternoon in the early 1980s The Smiths came to Chalkie Davies's small studio in a Bayswater mews. The band were new to photo sessions and had not yet settled on their individual looks. Morrissey wore a rayon smock and refused to change.

After the group shots Davies photographed the singer alone. The pictures went unseen for some thirty years.
