Martyn Goddard

Martyn Goddard is one of the defining photographers of the British New Wave era, renowned for creating some of the most enduring images of punk, post-punk, and new wave music. After studying photography at Harrow College of Art, he began his career assisting leading photographers before establishing himself as an independent photographer in the mid-1970s.

Working at the heart of Britain's rapidly evolving music scene, Goddard photographed artists including Blondie, The Jam, The Cure, Sham 69, and many of the musicians who shaped the visual identity of a generation. His photographs combine technical precision with an instinctive understanding of performance and personality, resulting in images that have become synonymous with the period.

Beyond his work in music, Goddard enjoyed a distinguished editorial career, contributing portraits and feature stories to the Sunday Telegraph Magazine while producing automotive and travel assignments for the influential Car Magazine. His contribution to professional photography was recognized in 1987 when he became a Fellow of the British Institute of Professional Photography.

Today, Martyn Goddard continues to preserve and catalogue his extensive archive, which documents one of the most creative and influential periods in popular music. His photographs are held in important private and institutional collections and remain an essential visual record of the artists who defined the late twentieth century.
