Some announcements describe a new professional relationship. This one carries a much longer history.
I first met Mick Rock in 2015. What began as a shared commitment to presenting his photographs soon became a close collaboration, and then an enduring friendship. Over the years that followed, we worked together on exhibitions and projects in Los Angeles, London, Mexico City, São Paulo, Buenos Aires and New York.
Each project gave us another way to place Mick’s photographs in context: as defining images of music culture, but also as works of photography with their own material history, authorship and lasting artistic significance.
Mick was generous, instinctive and fiercely protective of the life inside his images. He understood that a photograph could become inseparable from the mythology surrounding its subject, while remaining a physical object made at a particular moment, through a particular relationship between photographer and sitter.
His trust in us was extraordinary. He placed in my hands significant negatives, vintage photographs and archival material that he had never previously entrusted to anybody. We spent time looking at prints, discussing their histories and considering how the archive should be presented.
2015—2023 · Selected exhibitions
A history built through exhibitions
Our relationship with Mick was built in public as well as in private—through exhibitions that allowed his photographs to be experienced at architectural scale and within different cultural contexts.
Every project with Mick was memorable. Travelling and working with him was always a deliriously wonderful experience: unpredictable, intense, funny and alive with the same restless energy that animated his photographs.
These projects established a way of working: combining close knowledge of the archive with curatorial direction, ambitious production and the ability to place historically important photographs before new audiences.
Working directly with the Estate
A direct and informed relationship with the archive
The Music Photo Gallery is now the primary gallery working in direct coordination with the Mick Rock Estate.
This role gives TMPG priority access to Estate-stamped editions, lifetime-signed photographs, vintage prints and selected rare works. It also carries a wider responsibility: to protect provenance, preserve context and create meaningful opportunities for Mick’s work to be exhibited, studied and collected.
Together with the Estate, we will develop proposals for museums, cultural institutions, art fairs and festivals. We will advise private collectors seeking historically significant works, with clear information about print history, edition status, materials and provenance.
Galleries interested in representing selected works from the Mick Rock catalogue will also be able to collaborate with TMPG through a coordinated authorised network.
